Carr Family:
Got this e-mail from James Hornfischer (Thanks, Jim.), the author who wrote Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors. My mother and sister-in-law and I got to meet him at a book reading at Barnes & Noble in San Antonio. He also has a new book out about the USS Houston, called Ship of Ghosts. You can get these books off Amazon.com. Christmas presents, anyone? Learn more about his books at http://www.jameshornfischer.com/. Thought y’all might be interested. Pass it on. –Sarah Lohn
On December 15, the History Channel will premiere The Death of the Japanese Navy, its major new documentary on the Battle off Samar, for broadcast at 10 p.m. EST/9 p.m. CST. Produced by the whizzes at Digital Ranch, this one-hour program on the events featured in The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors is part of History Channel’s top-rated Dogfights series. Dogfights: Death of the Japanese Navy DVD
The concept of the series is to use computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create a you-are-there feel to key battles in history. For this episode, the first to feature a naval battle, their digital modelers have created sophisticated computer replicas of all the ships on both sides. I don’t know what it will look like, but it’s sure to be striking and dramatic recreation of the mayhem of October 25, 1944. I was interviewed for the show, as were a number of veterans of the battle I recommended to them. Please be sure to tune in.
Event occurs on 12/15/2006 from 09:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
