Recently because some other folks were inviting me I got on Facebook.
I have certain reservations about it:
- It is run by a korporation for profit, and as such I am always suspect as to what they will do with my information. In this world of spam and korporate greed I worry about that.
- I have heard/read anecdotes of identity theft and stalking from folks being on these social networking sites.
- I do worry sometimes that we are substituting cyber-interaction for real connections and real interactions.
- Again, anecdotally, I have heard of potentially employers searching these sites on potential employees.
- Given 2 and 4 I would be careful what I put on these sites.
- No offense meant to anyone, but they do remind me of being in 8th grade. Not the most pleasant period of my life.
Having given my caveats there are some positives:
- It is a good to stay connected with folks, especially if they are not close
- It is a good to stay connected with folks, especially the younger set. This is not much different than picking up a phone to them.
- I definitely like Facebook more than MySpace; MySpace just makes my head hurt
- Facebook is easy to use
- There are already quite a few members of the clan on Facebook
I’m not recommending that anyone get on Facebook, but I am throwing it out there for consideration. My effort around www.austin-carr.org is meant to aid in keeping the clan connected. This stems from remembering the wonderful summers at Mama Carr’s house when I was younger, much younger. The house always seemed to be full of 10,000 cousins, aunts, uncles, and assorted other folks.
Anyway, the story of the human race is about adaption, this is another tool to keep those connections.
